CBC News: Nearing extinction, optimism surrounds future of Atlantic whitefish (https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/atlantic-whitefish-extinction-1.5145236)

  • In 2018, Atlantic Whitefish, measuring only 2½ centimetres at the time, were removed for safekeeping to the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans fish hatchery at Coldbrook in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley.
  • Those fish, now at Dalhousie’s Aquatron facility, are 15 centimetres long and thriving. There are now enough fish to start a breeding program – which will be critical for Atlantic Whitefish recovery.

  • Atlantic Whitefish have been reported only in the Tusket River and Petite Rivière watersheds in southern Nova Scotia.
  • The Tusket River population no longer exists. The Petite Rivière population holds the last wild population of Atlantic Whitefish in the world.
The Atlantic Whitefish and its habitat are protected by provincial legislation, including the Nova Scotia Endangered Species Act and the Nova Scotia Environment Act
